British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside French aircraft in a combined operation on an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory used by the IS group, according to the UK's MoD.

The facility, located using reconnaissance, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was positioned in hills just north of the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a series of approach shafts providing entry to the site... early reports are that the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the strike conducted Saturday night and every plane involved returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as ISIS - established extremist governance over large swathes of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action shows the UK's leading role, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to stamp out any resurgence of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary John Healey said.

British military aircraft have performed surveillance missions over Syria to "prevent any attempted comeback" of IS after its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank all the members of our armed forces participating in this mission for their skill and their valour," he said. "They were among thousands of UK service members deployed over the festive period. This action, to remove dangerous terrorists who threaten our way of life, highlights how our armed forces are always on standby, continuously, ensuring Britain's security at home and influential overseas."

In December, the United States armed forces carried out what it termed a "massive strike" against Islamic State objectives in the country, subsequent to an attack claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The UN says Daesh still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in both countries.
