Area Law Enforcement
Around fifty cars have been smeared with what appears to be human blood in the German town of Hanau near Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.
Vehicles, exterior walls and postal boxes were defaced, occasionally with prohibited symbols, they announced in a statement.
Law enforcement report they were contacted in the late hours on Wednesday, when a resident noticed that a vehicle in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been covered with a reddish fluid.
The substance had been applied in the shape of a banned symbol, they stated.
Police then discovered many other marked vehicles and building exteriors in the surrounding area.
These symbols are banned in Germany under legislation prohibiting the visible presentation of symbols from the Nazi era.
Police report preliminary tests suggest the fluid was probably blood from a person.
"Currently there is no lead as to where it came from; officials are currently not aware of any injuries in relation with the event," they stated.
Municipal representatives announced they were trying "to resolve the case" and have asked to the residents for details.
A senior representative said the attack rendered him stunned and had to be addressed quickly.
"This event strikes at the core of Hanau and reawakens the trauma of the extremist attack in 2020," he stated on online, referring to the killing of nine people by a gunman focusing on residents of immigrant origin in 2020.
